In my project, I approach traditional Slavic ornamentation as a metaphor for the enduring traditions, values, and beliefs that have gradually been eroded and disrupted over time. Through intricate patterns and symbols inherent in Slavic ornamentation, I aim to evoke a sense of nostalgia for the cultural heritage that has faced challenges and transformations. By exploring these motifs in contemporary contexts, my work seeks to reflect on the complexities of cultural preservation amidst modern influences, conflicts, wars, and societal changes.

While working on this project, I was deeply reflective on the fractured ornament of my family's roots and connections. Delving into the complexities of my relatives' strained interpersonal relationships, I sought to approach these memories with empathy and a desire to heal. Simultaneously, amidst these personal reflections, I found myself confronted with the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Being of both Russian and Ukrainian heritage, these events resonate with me on a profoundly personal level, evoking a mix of sadness and a steadfast hope for reconciliation.

The turmoil of the conflict added a layer of emotional complexity to my project, shaping my artistic approach and thematic exploration. It became a metaphorical backdrop against which I contemplated the resilience of cultural and familial ties in the face of adversity. As I navigated through these challenging themes, I endeavored to convey a message of unity and peace, aiming to mend the fragmented pieces of the ornament through love and fostering harmonious relationships.

In my creative process, I aimed to capture the essence of these intertwined narratives—personal and geopolitical—through symbolism and artistic expression. By examining the fragments of familial and cultural heritage, I sought to highlight the universal themes of loss, resilience, and the enduring power of love in rebuilding what has been fractured.

Love was completely meaningless. But she gave meaning to everything else.”
