My book is about my fraternal grandmother, Baba Jenya. She was born into the noble Rogal-Levitsky family in Ukraine and lived through the turmoil of the socialist revolution. She narrowly escaped being on Stalin's execution list, fleeing from Kyiv to Moscow with her husband—my grandfather, a Ukrainian poet and pianist—and my father, who was only one year old at the time. Her journey reflects the strength and resilience of those who faced immense challenges during this turbulent period in history, surviving against the odds to protect her family and heritage.
I designed this book with a subtle resemblance to piano keys, as Baba Jenya gave me her piano when I was nine years old. This gesture allowed my family's passion for the piano to take root in me, and now it has been passed down to my children. On the black "keys" of this 'piano,' I included short historical references corresponding to key periods in Baba Jenya's life.
The cover of the book is laser-cut with traditional Ukrainian ornaments, which are also featured throughout its pages. The cream-colored paper enhances the book's charm and elegance.
