This artist book was created in anticipation of an approaching storm that threatened Florida when it intensified into a Category 5 hurricane. Initially, I planned to document five ordinary days in the life of my family, taking photos at specific times throughout each day. However, the project coincided with our preparations to evacuate ahead of the storm, while my children were running high fevers, and the uncertainty of what would happen next. Evacuating with sick children seemed daunting, adding to the sense of uncertainty and unease..
The use of intimate, high-contrast, duo-tone photography combined with minimal yet poignant text deepens the emotional impact, emphasizing the significance of each passing day. This artistic approach subtly evokes a sense of sadness, reminding us that much of our lives slip by unnoticed and unappreciated, often without the gratitude they deserve. We become consumed by phantom goals, trivial thoughts, and unnecessary tasks, distracted from fully enjoying our lives, our loved ones, and even our accomplishments. Constantly chasing after something new, we neglect the present, missing out on moments of meaning, reflection, and fulfillment.
The artist book encourages viewers to pause and reflect, suggesting that by paying closer attention to the present, we might begin to value the fleeting moments that otherwise slip away. It serves as a gentle reminder to appreciate the beauty and importance of everyday life.
